In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Augusta has initiated a large-scale debris removal operation to clear affected areas. The city is collaborating with local contractors, emergency services, and residents to manage storm-related waste and debris disposal effectively.

Debris removal teams are already working to clear major roads, public spaces, and critical infrastructure. Augusta's Environmental Services Department will organize scheduled pickups for residential storm debris. Residents are advised to separate storm debris from regular waste and place larger items like fallen trees and building materials in designated spots.

The city has hired licensed companies to speed up the clearing process, focusing on downed trees, damaged structures, and hazardous materials. Residents should avoid piling debris near power lines or utility poles. Collections are set to begin the week of October 7, with additional rounds planned if necessary.

Augusta’s waste collection contractors continue their usual routes where possible, aiming to catch up on missed collections due to the storm. Residents can place household trash in both trash and recycling containers at the curb. Richmond County residents showing proof of residency can dispose of household waste at the Augusta Landfill without fees on October 4 and 5 between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM at the customer drop-off area.

Administrator Tameka Allen stated, “The primary goal is to restore safety and normalcy to the residents of Augusta – Richmond County as quickly as possible. Removing debris left in the wake of the storm is crucial to keeping Augusta’s roads clear and preventing any potential hazards." She emphasized that Augusta is working closely with emergency management teams and first responders to prioritize heavily impacted areas.
