The Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce has extended congratulations to Dr. Jermaine Whirl, who has been named the sole finalist for the presidency of Savannah State University (SSU). Dr. Whirl is currently serving as the 2025 Chairman of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
Dr. Whirl has been leading Augusta Technical College as its President since 2020 and joined the Chamber Board of Directors in 2021. During his tenure at Augusta Technical College, he has been recognized for driving innovation and fostering workforce development and economic growth. His leadership resulted in record enrollment increases and stronger community partnerships, enhancing student success in a changing job market.
“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Whirl and this well-deserved recognition of his leadership,” stated Angie Cox, President & CEO of the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce. “His dedication to education and workforce & economic development has left a lasting mark on our region, and we are confident he will bring the same passion and strategic vision to Savannah State University.”
As Dr. Whirl transitions to this new role, Kimberly Wilder, an attorney at Davis, Chapman, & Wilder, LLC, will assume the position of Board Chair on March 1st. The Chamber anticipates a smooth transition in leadership while continuing its mission to support business growth and community prosperity.
The Augusta Metro Chamber expressed gratitude for Dr. Whirl's service and leadership and conveyed best wishes for his future endeavors at SSU.
