Today, President Donald J. Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law during a ceremony at the White House. Congressman Rick W. Allen, along with Republican Members of the Georgia Delegation, attended the event.
Congressman Allen expressed his support for the legislation in a statement: "President Trump and House Republicans made a promise to the American people to secure our border and prevent violent illegal aliens from roaming our communities. Now the law of the land, this critical legislation helps ensure no family has to endure what Laken Riley's family has this past year. While no legislative effort can soften the pain and suffering caused by this heinous act of violence, I am grateful to President Trump for signing the Laken Riley Act into law today. We will never allow Laken's memory to fade, and Robin and I continue to pray for her family and loved ones."
The Laken Riley Act mandates U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal aliens who commit theft offenses and requires their detention until removal from the country. Additionally, it provides states with standing to initiate civil actions against federal officials who do not enforce immigration laws.
Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed the bill before it was amended by the Senate last week. The amended version received final approval from President Trump today.
