Today, Congressman Rick W. Allen from Georgia's 12th district reintroduced the American Science First Act. The proposed legislation aims to address potential vulnerabilities in federal research funding that could be exploited by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The bill seeks to prevent the National Science Foundation (NSF) from granting funds to individuals or entities linked with Chinese military companies.
Congressman Allen emphasized the importance of this measure, stating, "We know all too well that the CCP regime will stop at nothing to undermine America's competitive edge. There is absolutely no excuse for the NSF—funded by U.S. taxpayers—to authorize federal grants to any individual or entity with ties to the CCP, which is why the American Science First Act is such a critical piece of legislation."
He further expressed optimism about advancing this bill under former President Trump's leadership, saying it would help protect intellectual property and maintain America's global leadership in research.
The National Science Foundation plays a significant role in advancing knowledge and sustaining global leadership through its grant programs. With an annual budget of $9.5 billion, it awards approximately 12,000 grants each year, contributing significantly to federal research funding.
