The Augusta Utilities Department has advised residents to avoid the Augusta Canal Towpath due to safety concerns following Hurricane Helene. The storm caused significant damage, resulting in numerous fallen trees and broken limbs, which have created hazardous conditions along the towpath.
Officials stress that staying off the towpath is crucial for public safety and to allow crews and contractors to work on repairs without interruption. Unauthorized access not only endangers individuals but also hampers the cleanup efforts.
Residents are still able to enjoy sections of the canal from Lake Olmstead Park to the Pumping Station or from Lake Olmstead to downtown for recreational activities. "The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority, and crews are working diligently to assess and repair the damage," stated an AUD representative. At present, there is no estimated timeline for when cleanup and repairs will be completed. Updates regarding the reopening of the towpath will be provided as progress is made.
The department expressed gratitude for public understanding and patience during this time. Residents are encouraged to report any additional hazards near the towpath by calling 706-842-3060. The AUD emphasized community cooperation in ensuring safety and restoring the area for public use as soon as possible.
