A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Taliaferro County Election Department in Georgia on October 29, 2024. The request, issued by East Central Georgia News, seeks to uncover the methods being used by the department to count votes in the upcoming election.
As a news organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate coverage of local governmental affairs, we at East Central Georgia News are particularly interested in whether the vote counting process is manual or automated. If it is manual, we have requested an estimate of how many people will be working on election night.
The FOIA request was made under the Georgia Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq., with a preference for receiving the information in electronic format. We believe that access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities, which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
As part of our commitment to disseminating information, we have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional. This request underscores our belief that access to this kind of information should not be hindered by financial constraints.
