FOIA Request Sent to Screven County Election Department Regarding Ballot Counting Methods on October 29, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Screven County Election Department in Georgia on October 29, 2024. The request, filed by East Central Georgia News, seeks detailed information about the methods used by the department to count votes.

In our pursuit of comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at East Central Georgia News have requested records under the Georgia Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq. Specifically, we have asked for a list of methods employed by the Screven County Election Department for vote counting. If votes are counted manually, we have also requested an estimated number of people who will be working on election night.

As a media organization committed to transparency and accountability in public institutions, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that as media professionals engaged in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver.

We await a response from the Screven County Election Department and will continue our efforts to provide clear and transparent information about local government operations to our readers.
