Due to the impact of Hurricane Helene, Augusta Utilities has announced that the Augusta Canal towpath will remain closed from the Raw Water Pumping Station to the Savannah Rapids Pavilion. The storm caused erosion, fallen trees, and other hazards, making the area unsafe for public access. However, residents can still use sections of the canal from Lake Olmstead Park to the Pumping Station or from Lake Olmstead to downtown for recreation.

"The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority, and crews are working diligently to assess and repair the damage," stated Augusta Utilities. Updates on when the towpath will reopen will be shared as repairs continue. The public's understanding and patience are appreciated during this restoration process.

For ongoing updates, individuals can follow the City of Augusta on Facebook and Twitter. Media inquiries should be directed to Leadra Collins at 706-823-4399 or [email protected].
