The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) has announced that Augusta, along with five other communities, has been awarded the PlanFirst designation. The cities of Acworth, Alma, Camilla, Monroe, and Warner Robins join Augusta as the newest PlanFirst communities for the 2025-2027 program cycle. This recognition is given to local governments for their efforts in community engagement and successful implementation of their Local Comprehensive Plans.

These six communities now join only 11 others in Georgia with this designation. To be eligible for PlanFirst status, a community must have Qualified Local Government status, an approved Service Delivery Strategy, current reports to DCA including Government Management Indicators and Local Government Finances, and meet regional Minimum Performance Standards.

The designation lasts three years starting January 1, 2025. It provides benefits such as statewide recognition, bonus points on Housing Tax Credits applications, reduced interest loans, annual eligibility for Community Development Block Grants, and additional points on DCA programs like the Redevelopment Fund and Downtown Revolving Loan Fund.

Augusta is located along the Savannah River about 150 miles east of Atlanta. It is known for hosting the Masters Tournament and housing the U.S. Army's Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Gordon. The city's main industries include medical services, military operations, and education.
