On May 25, 2023, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 467, the HALT Fentanyl Act, which would permanently reschedule fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs. Congressman Allen, a proud original cosponsor of the legislation, issued the following statement after supporting the bill on the House floor:

“Fentanyl-related substances are being manufactured by China and the cartels and pouring across our borders—flooding into our cities, communities, and neighborhoods in record numbers. Sadly, far too often, we have heard devastating stories from families across the country who have lost loved ones to this lethal drug. By permanently reclassifying this deadly substance as a Schedule I drug and giving law enforcement the necessary tools to keep it off our streets, H.R. 467 will save lives and help prevent further heart-wrenching, avoidable loss.”

If the emergency class-wide scheduling order expires:

  • Many fentanyl-related substances will become street-legal.
  • Law enforcement will lose the authority to seize these extremely lethal drugs.
  • Drug traffickers will be empowered to push deadlier and deadlier drugs on our streets, skirting federal law by changing as little as one molecule in the fentanyl formula to create legal variations.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection will lose the authority to seize these substances crossing the border.
