The semi-annual School Screenings held by Eisenhower Army Medical Center each August and January is one of the most-anticipated services offered to beneficiaries with school-aged children.
EAMC recently wrapped up the summer screening sessions … again, with great success. The final event was Aug. 13.
The screenings are designed to provide Fort Gordon families a one-stop opportunity to complete the four-point screening required for all newly enrolled students in the state of Georgia and consists of hearing, vision, dental and nutrition screenings. Additionally, routine vaccinations are provided with the support of EAMC’s Family Medicine Clinic staff. The event turns what could take several days or months into a 30-minute to 1-hour process.
Each of the School Screening events rely on EAMC volunteer staff for operation, Maj. Neidra Simmons, FMC OIC, said. Additionally, licensed practical nurse students from Fort Gordon's 68C Practical Nurse Course, worked alongside EAMC staff.
With current staffing challenges, it was uncertain if the event would take place this summer.
“It’s a testament to the dedication of EAMC staff,” Simmons said, “that the team pulled together to make it happen. It was refreshing to watch the team interact with each family and work together to create a fun and family friendly environment, while providing such an exceptional service.”
Families were greeted with friendly smiles and a circus-themed reception area decorated by volunteers from the Patient Administration staff.
“Overall, the event was well received by beneficiaries,” Simmons said, “It continues to be cost-effective, reducing child absenteeism from school and parent/guardian time away from work.”
Approximately 869 screenings were completed over the combined summer events and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
One parent wrote, "Everything was great! Thank you for a simple, stress-free and fun process."
"Everything was in one location and very organized,” a second parent said.
Another parent wrote, "The staff was amazing...cheerful, friendly, professional, and they kept everything moving so efficiently."
“On behalf of the School Screen Committee and EAMC leadership,” Simmons said, “we can't say thank you enough to the wonderful nurses, providers, specialty technicians, students, and all administrative and support staff who made this event possible.”
