Augusta Prep receives unique chess board donation from alumni

Thank you to Augusta Prep alum George McCall (c/o ‘82) and his family, Mac (c/o ‘14), Trent (c/o /17), Dan Jr., and Linda, for recently gifting a homemade four-way chess board and set to Augusta Prep.

Chess is an important part of Augusta Prep. It is taught in first grade as a way to develop critical-thinking skills. Students are encouraged to continue their participation in chess throughout their Prep careers, with Chess Clubs and frequent informal play in our Lower, Middle and Upper schools.

Augusta Prep features several Chess tournaments during the year. Last December, 36 people (alumni, faculty and current students) participated in the seventh annual Alumni Chess Tournament in the Baird Library.  Physics teacher William Bowman defeated Thomas Suh (c/o ‘15) in the championship match.  In February, 38 Augusta Prep Lower School Students gathered in our own Baird Library, with Ahaan Khiani earning the title as “Lower School Champion.”  Also this past February, 16 Augusta Prep students (mostly Middle and Upper) competed in the annual Student Chess Tournament, with Aarun Jabalayan being named Prep Student Champion for 2021-2022, defeating Edwin Vaughn in the championship match.  Chess tournaments are planned for 2022-2023, of course!
