Property Taxes

A home tax assessment, done by the Columbia County Tax Assessor’s office, is used to determine the value of your property for tax purposes. The Board of Assessor’s and Tax Assessor’s office, not the Board of Commissioners, are the ones to compute the fair market value of your home. By law, the fair market value is based on comparable sales in your area. For any questions regarding your fair market value, please contact the Tax Assessor’s office at 706 868-4223.

What is the difference between Fair Market Value and Assessed Value?

Fair market value is calculated by the Tax Assessor's Office, and unless a special program applies, property taxes are levied at 40% of the fair market value giving you the assessed value of your home.
