THOMSON-MCDUFFIE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Youth Leadership McDuffie Visits Thomson Museum

Exhibit

Thomson-McDuffie Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Nov. 1.

Youth Leadership McDuffie recently began their annual county tour beginning at the McDuffie Museum.

Angie Roberts, the Lead Teacher at the McDuffie Achievement Center and chair of the Youth Leadership McDuffie Advisory Board, said the educational program motivates our future leaders to take an active role in our community. Since 2016, it has provided a curriculum of leadership skills for students to apply in the community. The 2021 members, 20 seniors who attend Thomson High, Briarwood Academy and Warren County High, are Elizabeth Axon, Briarwood; Aubrey Bentley, Thomson; Savannah Blevins, Briarwood; Kenyarie Crockett, Thomson; Kendall English, Thomson; Porter Eubank, Briarwood; Rylee Foster, Thomson; Cambrie Hayes, Thomson; Savannah Hopkins, Briarwood; Antreveon Johnson, Thomson; Elizabeth Osborne, Thomson; MaKenzie Parrish, Briarwood; Kayla Reynolds, Thomson; Jordan Roberts, Thomson; Eva Rogers, Thomson; Arianna Stuart, Thomson; Laney Swint, Thomson; Camron Tucker, Warren County; Wyatt Vann, Briarwood; and Abby Williamson, Thomson.

Each month participants spend a day learning about a different aspect of the

community, as well as ways that they can get involved. This year’s Community History Day started out with a visit to the McDuffie Museum. Seventeen of the twenty students in the group had never visited the museum, so for many, this was their first true taste of local history. Two different students noted that “the museum had a variety of different stuff so we got little bits of history about all kinds of things from our area.” In addition to the McDuffie Museum, the seniors visited the historic Rock House, the old Wrightsboro community, the seemingly ancient Rock Dam and Senator Tom Watson’s fascinating Hickory Hill. The next session for the group will be Agricultural Impact Day on November 17th.
