City of Grovetown issued the following announcement on Sept. 8.
On 9/7/2021, Public Works Director Sylvester Rosier was notified of a citizen complaint of stagnant water in a retention pond located in the Senator’s Ridge subdivision.
Upon further investigation, city employees discovered a sanitary sewer manhole that was overflowing in a wooded area behind residents’ fences. The overflow was the result of a sewer blockage, caused by large sticks, grease, wipes, rags, a mophead, and other items.
The blockage was cleared by city employees at approximately 3:45 pm on 9/7/2021. It is estimated approximately 20,000 gallons of sewage overflowed.
Contaminated water did not enter a stream, tributary, or storm water system. The spill was contained to a wooded area and did not spill into backyards or public areas.
City employees placed hydrated lime to decontaminate the area, danger tape was placed around the area, and signs were posted indicating a sanitary sewer overflow had occurred and for citizens to avoid the area.
The spill was reported to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the Columbia County Department of Public Health. The problem was reported, diagnosed, resolved, remediated, and reported in a period of less than 24 hours.
The City of Grovetown would like to take this opportunity to remind citizens not to flush items such as wipes, paper towels, rags, mop heads, and grease down toilets or drains.
Often, many items marketed as “flushable” cause blockages or damage to the sewer system and wastewater treatment plant. If you see or suspect a sewer issue, please contact the Public Works Department at 706-863-7546.
