State House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) has appointed Stephen Lawson, a communications strategist with connections to Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis, as his new Senior Advisor for Communications. Burns highlighted the importance of Lawson’s role in shaping messaging to advocate for Georgia’s interests in Atlanta.
According to a press release by Georgia’s General Assembly, Burns said, “I’m proud to welcome Stephen to our team. Stephen brings with him a wealth of experience, expertise and strategic acumen, having worked at some of the highest levels of politics, policy and government. He will be an integral part of our team as we work to continue delivering results for the people of Georgia, and I look forward to having him on board.”
In response to his appointment, Lawson said in the same press release, “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity that Speaker Burns has given me, and I look forward to hitting the ground running to advance the House’s agenda and deliver for the people of Georgia. Speaker Burns is a leader who has consistently stood on principle and never backed down from doing what is right for the people of our great state. From creating jobs and lowering costs for hardworking Georgians to improving education and making our state a safer place, the House has consistently delivered for the people of Georgia under Speaker Burns’ leadership. I look forward to helping him share that message to an even broader audience and in new ways as he continues working to make Georgia the best place to live, work and raise a family.”
The press release further detailed Lawson’s career before joining Burns’ team. Lawson served under Florida Governors Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis, along with U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler, Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, and Congressman Mike Collins. As he assists Burns, he will also maintain his partnership in his firm.
Finally, according to the same press release by Georgia’s General Assembly, Burns serves as Georgia’s 75th House Speaker, representing the 159th legislative district covering Screven County and parts of Effingham and Bulloch Counties.
