FOIA Request Sent to Screven County Election Department Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Screven County Election Department on February 5, 2025. The request, made by East Central Georgia News, seeks comprehensive details about the candidates running in the upcoming spring election.

In accordance with the Georgia Open Records Act ยง 50.18.70 et seq., we have requested a list of all candidates vying for office in the imminent election. The specifics sought include each candidate’s first, middle and last names, as well as the office they are contesting for and its jurisdiction. Furthermore, information about each candidate’s party affiliation is also requested.

To ensure comprehensive coverage of each candidate’s campaign, we have also asked for their contact information. This includes their address, phone number and email address.

As a media organization dedicated to providing accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, access to such public records is essential for us at East Central Georgia News. It allows us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the public.

Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we believe that we qualify for a fee waiver as a media professional under the provisions of the FOIA. We await a positive response from the Screven County Election Department and will continue our efforts to provide comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
