Family: Spratt is married with two sons
Background: Spratt’s family served in the Marine Corps. He grew up in Beaufort, S.C., and also lived in Jacksonville, N.C., while his father was deployed at Camp Lejeune. Spratt was in the seventh grade when one night his father died in a car accident. Afterward, he moved back to Beaufort, graduating from Beaufort High School. Upon graduation, he and his friend, Richard Smalls, began doing carpentry work. Spratt soon sought another career path.
“I said, man, let’s get out of here,” he told his friend.
Spratt and Smalls decided to join the Marine Corps. They went to the recruiting center, but the Marine Corps office was closed. The adjacent Army office was open; they both joined. Spratt initially got rejected because he had flat feet. He went for an exam at the local Naval hospital and received good news. He passed his exam and received a letter stating he was fine.
Spratt soon joined the Army, spending 30 years and three months, achieving the rank of sergeant major.
How he found Prep: Spratt spent 30 years on active duty in the Army, working for a time with former Augusta Prep teacher and basketball coach Mike Guthrie at Fort Gordon. While Spratt was finishing up his active duty, he sought future job opportunities. A job at Fort Gordon fell through when he learned of the Facilities Manager position from Guthrie, who invited him to come to basketball practice on campus.
“I had no idea where Augusta Prep was,” Spratt said.
He found the school, found the gym and found Guthrie. On the spot, Guthrie asked him if he wanted the job. Spratt affirmed that he did, and he left to work on his resume. Spratt soon got a call from Prep for an interview. After the interview, he returned to Fort Gordon, receiving a phone call with an offer.
What he enjoys about Prep: “The people. I get to meet everybody. I get to see everybody from Lower to Upper. I get to see the little kids, the big kids, all the teachers. That’s the thing I really enjoy.
“I don’t do the same thing every day. It’s not repetitive. And it’s a challenge.”
Hobbies: Weightlifting, swimming, enjoyed playing racquetball in the past but has retired from the sport (“My knees are shot.”)
