Augusta is recognized as Georgia’s second oldest and second largest city, according to the official website. The city operates under a consolidated government led by a mayor and ten commissioners according to its official site. Historic preservation is notable in Augusta, which includes nine neighborhoods listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with several historic monuments and cemeteries as reported by city officials.
The area features significant landmarks such as President Woodrow Wilson’s boyhood home and the Ezekiel Harris House built in 1797 according to city records. In addition, Augusta developed its canal in 1847, making it once the world’s second largest inland cotton market as stated by local sources. The city is also part of the Central Savannah River Area spanning counties across Georgia and South Carolina according to municipal information.
The upcoming workshop reflects ongoing efforts by Augusta’s government departments to support small businesses within this historically significant community.
